Introduction to Physical Theatre

The Redbridge Drama Centre in collaboration with their associate company Fools Play Collective, present a dynamic, new workshop. Over an intense four day period participants will be introduced to the use of play in the theatre-making process and principles of working as an ensemble through exploring the role of the Chorus and the creation of tragi-comic heroes.

The process will culminate in an informal sharing of the work to family and friends.

Running from Tuesday the 28th to Friday the 31st of May, each day will begin at 10am and end at 4pm with a lunch break.. The price for the whole workshop will be £100 payable in advance to secure a place.

The workshop will be open to ages 14 and above. We encourage all levels of experience and ability to apply for this week, though we seek participants with a high level of openness, rigour and willingness to play.

Fools Play Collective are an associate company at the Drama Centre, currently developing a new piece for touring in 2014. Their previous piece “Our Soldier” received critical acclaim at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2012 (★★★★ Fringe Biscuit - Light and dark collide as Macbeth is blended with physical theatre to create a stunning, visual performance) and played to sell out audiences at the Redbridge Drama Centre. A unique theatre workshop with leading international physical theatre, voice and community practitioner Anna-Helena McLean formerly of Poland’s Gardzienice Centre for Theatre Practice supported by members of the ACT ensemble and creative team. The two week long workshop will involve 4 days of core training, 5 days application to performance based on new writing inspired by Shakespeare
and 5 days intensive time working closely with the ACT ensemble on a new adaptation of The Tempest for a work in progress presentation in the culminating Moon Fool festival 12-14 July.

The work is conducted in English but welcomes people of all nationalities.
Participants will live together as a community at the beautifully located Quadrangle Trust site while learning new techniques for self expression and drawing on original repertoire sourced through extensive practical research on Romeo & Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream and The Tempest. The rhythm of the work will celebrate the rural surroundings and allow time for walking, talking, cooking, relaxation, dreaming as well as physical and musical exploration of cast scenes and participation in rehearsals with the ACT ensemble.
This workshop offers a deeply personal journey for individuals to explore themselves in new ways with expert leadership. Participants will be introduced to music and storytelling techniques based on scenes and characters from the chosen plays.
The workshop is suitable for people from all backgrounds. For casting purposes please send a CV and portrait snap or head shot requesting an application form by email at

A deposit of £200 is required to secure a place. Deadline 30th May. Thereafter participants will be sent their casting and text to use during the workshop. All remaining finances settled by transfer and receipt on 12th June. Cheques sent by post need to clear by the same deadline.

DIRECTOR'S BIO:

On graduating in Music & Drama from Royal Holloway, Anna-Helena became a principal member of leading experimental physical theatre company Gardzienice in Poland for 7 years. Her performances included Metamorphoses & Electra (La Mama NYC 02/04; Meyerhold Centre Moscow 03; Barbican London 06). Creative Founder & Artistic Director of Moon Fool, Actor - Chorus - Text (ACT) and ACT Youth she leads international music & theatre exchange work worldwide. She previously worked as composer & ensemble trainer for Helena Kaut-Howsen’s Yerma with Kathryn Hunter in 2005, the outdoor physical theatre company Periplum on Arqieum (Royal National Theatre 2006), Company Collisions Nothing Left To Lose (London International Mime Festival 2007), Cora Bissett’s Glasgow Girls Musical (The National Theatre of Scotland 2012) and Theatre Ad Infinitum's 'It's a Wonderful Life' (The Bush). A core member and inaugurator of Swedish based The Awake Project: premiered at Jackson’s Lane in London Oct 2011, while also touring Awake Love Orchestra and Awake Youth. She has been a guest director & trainer for BA & MA actors at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland annually since 2004 and currently lectures in extended voice at the Uni of Winchester as well as working in association with the NSD in Delhi, and drama schools and universities throughout the UK, Europe and beyond. Anna-Helena has directed adaptations of King Lear, Richard III for able and disabled performers and Romeo and Juliet. She composed and created a solo musical cabaret adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream for a US tour in Spring 2012 culminating in the generation of a music album and UK tour 2013 with producer www.richardsonprm.com. Anna-Helena is currently acting in a new production The Ballad of Dave directed by Kirsty Hously in association with The Lowry and Jackson's Lane, due to tour the UK from late Summer 2013.

EdFringe MEGA Update

Four shows left! We can’t quite believe it’s nearly over already. We’ve all had an absolute blast whilst we’ve been up here and ZOO venues have been the most excellent hosts.

The response to ‘Our Soldier’ has been brilliant from audience and critics alike. Here is a rundown of the best of the reviews so far:
